Jul 29, 2017 7:12 AMSilsbury Island - General History (Publicly available version)
|The below is a general history overview of Silsbury Island, which has been released for public consumption. Due to the sensitivity of certain aspects however they have been redacted to protect the respective parties. |
Silsbury Island was created by an ancient civilization many thousands of years ago (at minimum) [redacted]. In order to do this safely [redacted], a powerful anti-magic and anti-tech field was draped over the island that would interfere with magic as well as disrupt highly advanced technology and power sources. It was especially directed to power sources though, [redacted].
It is suspected that this civilization has some connection to that of the mainland's as an offshoot of that one. All that is known is once the mainland civilization collapsed, the island went into a safety isolation mode, where the Fog was drawn around it to prevent any inter-dimensional access and prevent it from suffering the same fate as the minds and other beings on the mainland (and to an extent, Infinitas).
When the civilization collapsed, it left behind several structures and relics of it's time, the most important being that of the organization that [redacted] and kept the Island running. The organization has lost it's name to time, but it's structure remains solid since then and is now known as the Enclave.
At it's head is the Overseer, whom determines policy, priorities and is in overall command of the island's meager infrastructure. Below the Overseer are agents, whom serve to act as it's hands-on division to deal with the more difficult things that breach into or migrant onto the island. [Redacted]
Below the Agents are the Gardeners - whom were one of the original denizens of the Island that were uplifted into their current role. They are as their name suggests: Gardeners. Beings that look after the flora and fauna of the Island as well as providing aid to those sentients that have been stranded here. They are the basic foot soldiers, workers and eyes on the ground for the Overseer.
Overall both Agents and Gardeners are given a great deal of Autonomy, primarily because with time the organization has focused on sustaining and keeping the systems operational more than actually administrating the Island itself. This has especially been through the many disasters the Island has gone through. A brief overview of these disasters are as below, with timestamps being x years before current time.
Two Interplanar faults appear on the Island in it's Southern Sector. The first fault goes to the Elemental Plane of Fire, appearing within the city of Aman-Ra, dividing it in half and destroying it. The entire population of Aman-Ra is killed off save for a few survivors that migrate East to establish the settlement of Survivor's Respite. The South-Central Control Tower is destroyed in the upheaval as the entire South-Central section is pushed upwards by the fault, creating the Mesa there.
A second fault appears to the Elemental Plane of Ice some days later, balancing out the heat created by the first fault. No casualties are reported from this appearance. It's presence however creates a wave of cold that engulfs the North of the Island, creating snow fields that were not there before.
Three months later, Agents and the Overseer create control geysers on either side of the Fire Fault in order to contain it's spread and disseminate it's energy. Containment is succesful. No containment proves necessary for the Northern ice fault.
Second Interplanar Fault
~31,000 Years ago
A second Interplanar Fault to the elemental plane of Fire appears to the South of the Mesa. It's appearance raises the Mesa up significantly, destroying the city of Ylliad with several Earthquakes as well as the city of Karl-Soga. Three months later, the Agents and Overseer establish two control geysers that successfully contain the fault and prevent it from expanding.
~29,000 Years ago
The pattern of Elemental Planar Faults continue as two more appear - but this time under the water to either side of the Island in the form of two Whirlpools that go to the Elemental plane of Air. This starts to drain the waters around the Island. To compensate, three faults to the Elemental Plane of Water are established in the form of giant pillars of water that roam near where the whirlpools are, transporting water in at a similar rate to how it is removed. These systems are maintained by external outposts outside of the Island's field in five different locations.
Giant Monster Attacks
~20,000 Years ago
A series of monsters appear from the fog around the Island, creating a massive wave of casualties all along the coast before they are driven back. Several towers and Sinhai Castle are destroyed during this battle. In order to combat increasing aggression from the Fog, the Overseer allows through five powerful dragons in order to help defend the Island. In exchange, these dragons will operate freely with exemptions under the anti-magic field. These dragons are as follows: Jikyd the Fierce, whom guards the North; Anwar the Enlightened, whom guards the East; Loketh the Spiteful, whom guards the South-East; Shandin the All-Seeing, whom guards the South-West and finally Axra the Mighty, whom guards the North-West and West. These Guardians take up their bases in the control outposts for the whirlpools, creating an extra layer of security.
Metro System Collapses
~16,000 Years ago
The final legacy infrastructure of the old civilization collapses as the Metro becomes completely unusable and sealed off in many locations. The metro was meant as a fast means of travel between the corners of the Island. Age, the fault appearances and the monster attacks had already claimed the southern parts of the Island's Metro - but two stations remained active, with a metro running from the Red Line Station near the West Control Tower up to the Orange Line Station near the Enclave. The tunnel in between collapsed when a massive swarm of Rats migranted in, multiplying rapidy and making the tunnel unusable and unsafe for passage. It was decided that for safety's sake the stations would be sealed off and the trains shut down. It was unsure what would happen to the rats but it was the hope that they would perish as the tunnels were collapsed. A few hundred years later though their fate became apparent.
~15,000 Years ago
A transformative plague called the 'Feral Death' sweeps through the Island, hitting the population of Gardeners and other survivors on the Island. It hits primarily humanoid individuals, slowly turning them into animals both mentally and physically - before then killing them off from Heart Failure. Nearly 60% of Gardeners are wiped out as is the city of Iterdale. The Overseer calls for Quarantine measures for the Enclave, which is sealed off to protect the young there.
Casualties through the island are unknown, but the source of it is identified after a bit: the City of Iterdale had dug into one of the old metro tunnels that was still intact and it was infested with rat swarms. These swarms were initially contained but some rats escaped - and apparently were carriers of the disease. A scientist named Ishkar donned a permanent transformation to become a rat herself, then descended down into the tunnels in order to perform research. In the weeks afterwards, a Vaccine was delivered to the Overseer from her, but her own fate was unknown - she was never heard from again even as the tunnel was sealed as per her letter and request. A monument is erected to her courage and sacrifice to the west of the Enclave.
The city of Iterdale was abandoned, with likely carriers still suspected and present in the place and thus placed under quarantine. The nearby castle of Clearwall was abandoned saved for a small skeletal crew that would watch for any major problems.
Arrival of the Ent Swarm
~10,000 Years ago
10,000 years ago the first non-Overseer related faction appeared on the Island. The Ents were a race of hive-mind insects that had migranted onto the Island. They made contact with the overseer and after lengthy negotiations, were given a place to stay in the old Red Line Station, which they were able to clear on their own. The swarm now has constructed a massive hive there, while the hive mind keeps to itself. [redacted]. Overall the colony has existed for Thousands of years since then and has had little relations with the towns around it - with the exception of the tribe in Coppertop, whom worship the hive mind as a deity. This would prove to be a major point of contention a few hundred years later.
Rise and fall of the Earl of Isenhart
~9,000 years ago
The Earl of Isenhart, a powerful demagogue arrives with a mass migrant of several hundred people from his native town. He quickly siezes power over the masses and establishes the town of Isenhart in his name. The town grows rapidly into a city, absorbing individuals from out in the woods and other smaller settlements. He grows rapidly in power and influence over the local population - eventually coming into direct confrontation with the guardians and agents that are living in the town and helping it. The Overseer, not wishing to risk further decline in population withdraws and leaves Isenhart to himself.
Emboldened by this, Isenhart sets his eyes to one of the villages that refuses to bend to his will: Coppertop. He pushes forth with some of the forces he has established to take over the village - only to draw the ire of the Ents that lived to it's west. The hive mind joins in the side of the villagers of Coppertop, eventually bringing the Island's first official war. The fighting is fierce, with a great deal of low level technology and magic being used - half the hive is destroyed, while breaches in the tunnels sees it's size reduced further as swarms of rats that were previously kept at bay invade and take over. However despite this the Hive Mind eventually pushes to Isenhart, killing the Earl in the streets of the city.
All that is left of the town are it's ruins and the manor - which has been left intact. Rumors abound that the mind did not kill him entirely, but instead cursed him to roam the manor forever as a spirit in an attempt to spite him.
Though the first war, it was not the last. Many conflicts have arisen over the years since between settlements and villages over scarce resources, interpersonal conflicts and ideological differences. The greatest of this came 6,000 years later, when the Enclave was attacked.
~4,000 years ago
The Enclave had until this point been largely neutral in any conflicts on the Island, preferring to stay out of politics and focus purely on keeping the systems of the island running. The Overseer in particular did not wish to interfere in the natural population - even though there were many pockets that resented the order that the Agents or Gardeners helped to upkeep. This resentment eventually grew till a small group of individuals decided that enough was enough and it was time for the Overseer to fall.
They were a group of Malcontents, anarchists and bandits, whom sought power through illicit means and were always stymied by the Overseer's fingers. Now however they had enough and were going to strike back. They disguised themselves as a group of pilgrims going to Ishkar's monument, stopping by the Enclave. Then in the dead of night, they struck. Using home made explosives, salvaged guns and some powerful psionics they had hidden, they used the stability of the area around the Enclave to also trigger many powerful magics and explosions.
The result was a chain reaction and attack that destroyed a majority of the Enclave's systems, ruining it's structure and apparently injuring the Overseer before the group was eliminated and contained. Though repairs were eventually made, the Enclave never fully recovered while [redacted].
~1,500 years ago
A large number of migrants open up all over the island, depositing several thousand sentients and more than double that number of wild fauna. As part of an emergency response, Agents and Gardeners are deployed on a scale that has not been seen in millenia in both rescue and containment options.
Existing villages become overcapacity and new ones are formed as various groups come together and band in varying ideologies. Some settlements are simple manors with a few surrounding homes, while other major villages spring up. Snow Valley, centered around the old Rosemary Manor, is formed around this time and becomes the largest settlement on the island with a population of 1,012 individuals - surpassing that of the Enclave's 940.
Other notable settlemetns formed during this period are the Ratask Tribe to the far south, Ylliad and Callahan's Respite. Security around the control towers are tightened around now to prevent adventurers and other explorers from entering them unwanted. Similarly, the Obelisks now have permanent Gardener settlements as a security measure.
~1,000 years ago
A strange creature emerges from the fog to the East and Anwar is witnessed speaking to it at great length before it returns back to the fog. A glutteral scream emerges from his den when he returns before the great sea-dragon goes mad and begins to attack all within sight.
Caravans moving along the Eastern road are attacked and consumed within moments, while the road itself is completely destroyed. Anwar makes his way to the East Control Tower with clear intention of destroying it - but is pushed back by it's defenses.
Agents and Gardeners eventually arrive, helping to control and contain Anwar - it is rumored that an unusual being related to the Overseer was witnessed with them as they attempted to subdue the maddened dragon.
In the end they succeeded and Anwar was driven back to his lair. His title was then changed to what it is now - Anwar the Mad and though he still does his guardianship duty, the Enclave has warned all citizens of Silsbury to not make contact with Anwar to ensure he does not devolve further.
A large meteor strikes the town of Ylliad, destroying it completely and setting off Earthquakes all through the island.
Fortunately, the damage is very much contained as eyewitness reports suggest a powerful monk named Yu-Darshan sacrificed his life to destroy the meteor in the air above Ylliad, giving a chance for survivors.
They reported seeing him jump high in the air and essentially 'punch' the meteor in a blinding array of light. Unfortunately he did not survive the encounter and the largest fragment still destroyed a majority of the village. Still, the damage was contained to one section of the island and did not spread far.
Roughly 500 years ago, a group of 8 different ancient dragons arrived on Silsbury. The enclave immediately negotiates with each and [redacted]. These dragons and their fates are as below:
Unnidi, The Gentle - Male Silver Dragon, age 4,300 years - Last seen near Ratask Tribe circa 200 years ago. Usually disguised and travels as a red anthro pheonix hawk, dressed in silver robes that float around him. Very gregarious and kind souled, a follower of the God Bahamut.
Copat, The Voiceless - Psionic Female Purple Dragon, age 3,100 years - last seen near Lilliput tower around 320 years ago. Usually polymorphed as some form of wildlife. She is mute, but is capable of communicating via psionics. A very withdrawn individual that prefers to meditate, study the power of the mind. She has very little need for mortal company and if she must have it prefers the company of wild animals, as they do not need to speak either.
Midhys, The Taker Of Life - Female Black Dragon, age 1,400 years - last seen near the ruins of Aman-Ra West some 50 years ago. Does not polymorph and prefers to remain in her default form though keeps a low 'signature' to prevent being tracked down easily. She lives in the graveyard of the ruins, having created her den there. She is very undead oriented and spends most of her time creating grotesque undead abominations from the skeletal remains. Occasionally these creations escape into the surrounding lands, roaming the desert before the sun turns them to dust. She is a follower of Tiamat and is quiet opposed to the followers of Bahamut, attacking them on sight.
Bydrairos, Champion Of The Skies - Male Red Dragon, age 2,400 years - currently an active resident within the Ruins of Aman-Ra East. He enjoys the warm environment and can be often seen basking in the lava of the planar fault. Though he is a follower of Tiamat, he is also very lazy and does not care much for the affairs of mortals or for the conflict between the two Gods, especially given that they are not here in this universe. Instead he simply lazes about, occasionally trading with caravans that come nearby Aman-Ra East for any items of interest.
Ioroi, The Magnificent - Male Gold Dragon, age 4,500 years - by far the oldest of the dragons to arrive and the most powerful, Ioroi was one of the more devoted followers of Bahamut, but at the request of the Enclave kept the lowest profile of all the dragons that arrived. He settled into Saintsberry, living a fairly normal life by starting up a church of Bahamut and otherwise keeping a low profile. He came into some power a couple hundred years later when he took over as temporary mayor of the town for a hundred years. He was last spotted 200 years ago when his form was taken by a migrant off-world. MAF currently suspect that he may have been take by the migrant to Infinitas instead of off-world.
Ymmi, The Mysterious - Female Blue Dragon, age 1,000 years - the youngest of the group of dragons to arrive, Ymmi is one of the most neutral of them. Worshipping neither Bahamut nor Tiamat, Ymmi instead seems to be fascinated by mortals, focusing her study on them as much as possible. A fairly calm and introverted personality, she nevertheless has a keen eye and observant edge that lets her pick up on others very carefully. She currently lives in Snow Valley where she has polymorphed into the form of a bipedal blue female dragon some 9' tall and acts as a communications advisor to the mayor.
Mevrirris, Firebreath - Male Copper Dragon, age 3,000 years - Mevirris is one of the only non-Enclave personnel to have been granted access to a control tower. The booksmart copper dragon currently resides in the Southern Control Tower and works closely with the Enclave personnel on research and repair of the systems. He has a ravenous hunger for knowledge and has been pursuing this for the last many centuries with the help of the Agents that reside there. He is however very much opposed to Tiamat and will attack any followers of them on sight, believing that the knowledge in the towers must never fall to that of evil. He is usually polymorphed as a large anthro fox with seven tails.
Lunar, Moonwalker - Female White Dragon, unknown age, though younger than Ioroi - the least is known about Lunar, Moonwalker amongst all the dragons. It seems that her negotiations with the Enclave and the Overseer did not go as well as anticipated and she opted to leave the island. It is not sure where she went as she did not go into the fog. It is suspected that she instead lives in a lair under the water to the North-West of the Island and still sleeps there to this day assuming she was not migranted away.
Contact re-established with Infinitas
After many Millenia of radio silence, contact has been re-established with Infinitas. This has spurred new activity in an otherwise declining state of affairs. The rest as they say, is history.
